How to give support access to your WordPress website

Sometimes you have a problem with your WordPress website and you need to grant access to the admin area for them to check it out. Here are some steps and tips to help you.

I like to make a backup of my site before I give access to anyone. Reason is, if they mess something up, then I can revert back.

Go into your admin area to Users>Add New and create a new User. I create one with the username “Support” to make it clear for me. I use one of my email addresses as I have many and you need a different one for each user. If you don’t have a second email address perhaps you can create a “Forward” which forwards a new email address on your domain name to your existing email address without actually creating a new email address account. Finally you can just make one up as you don’t really need it, but only make one up that you know no one actually is using, otherwise they can use it to reset the password and gain access to the website.

Give the new User Administrator rights because likely they need it.

Give the Login URL (location of the login page as sometimes it is not standard, for example some people change their login address for protection, the Username and the Password to the support techs.

If you are in a support forum, then you first want to ask them how you can share the login information in a private way. If you are already communicating in a private way you can just give it to them. Alternately if you can use a service like One Time Secret which lets you provide information to someone via a link and once they view it once it is deleted. I do this sometimes when sharing access to something via email with people – I will provide most of the access information like the login username in the email and then will provide the One Time Secret link for just the password, that way if someone hacks either of our email addresses, they cannot gain access.

Once the support has been provided, I then go into to Users in my admin and edit the Support user: I change their role to “No role for this site” and I change the password. This way I can use it the next time but in the meantime it provides no room for someone to access my site using it.
